The music for this sound work was recorded and composed by Ben Turner.
This project is an attempt to preserve what was once a treasured institution; it has been a journey of historical research, anthropological investigation, collaboration, active listening and direct participation in novel field recording and music production techniques. The intention has been to capture the very essence and soul of Peterborough City Market. By applying numerous multiform research and sound techniques the composer has produced a sonic work akin to that of a soundscape symphony consisting of six movements, concluding with an overture. Together, the movements are intended to communicate to the listener the life force and lifespan of the market since the time it was founded.
Much gratitude and thanks go out to:
Carolyn Devine and David Jost for allowing me to interview them,
and to Chris Porscz for providing me with all of his entire collection of amazing photographs which document the lives of people frequenting and occupying the city market spanning 50 years.
