I love it when someone comes into the studio, pulls out their guitar and says, "I really want to get this song out of my head but my voice isn't so good today, I have a bit of sore throat, do you think we should bother?" I say: "let's do it, now!".
Then silence, some tinkering around...then the magic happens. It's the moment that in my job I crave for, that initial discovery, a new feeling.
As the engineer I am thinking, how can I capture this as it sounds? right now, without interfering with it? As the producer I am thinking, how can we develop this further? what other instruments can we scoop up and shove in to make the broth taste better? It's a constant internal battle :)
I first started working with Luke when he and his current band, The Portland popped into Chime to enquire about the possibility of recording a single. That was around 3 or 4 years ago now, when the band were all pushing 17-18yrs old.
Luke decided that he wanted to record a song that he wrote during his time in isolation. I was very glad that he did because it was, in my humble opinion, an amazing heart-felt and hair raising performance that I was fortunate enough to capture in a single moment of flow.
